WRIGHT, Joseph, of Derby (1734-1797) engraved by John Raphael SMITH

The Children of Walter Synnot Esqr.

London: John Raphael Smith, April 25, 1782. Mezzotint. Sheet size: 19 7/8 x 13 3/4 inches (platemark).

The charming composition is animated by an apparent dispute between the child in the center, whose gesture suggests he wants to set free the pigeon he is holding, and the boy kneeling on the right, who wants to put it back in the cage. The child on the left is fetchingly overcome by agitated sensibility.

An outstanding example of designing an engaging sentimental narrative to create interest in a group portrait. This sort of strategy was imitated as late as the early 20th century, in the paintings of John Singer Sargent.

Chaloner Smith 160; Le Blanc 160; Tate Gallery catalogue (1990), P24, fourth state.
